Chaucer as a Representative of his Age - Geoffrey Chaucer

Chaucer as Representative of 14th Century
Or
 Chaucer’s Contribution to English Literature

Let us discuss Chaucer as representative of 14th century society. Chaucer has contributed a lot to the English literature by writing this grand masterpiece which is a hallmark on the face of English literature even in the modern age. He has described the facts about the 14th century society in such a way that a true picture of his society emerges before the reader’ eyes.

The greatest quality of Chaucer’s ‘Prologue to the Canterbury Tales’ is that he has not presented any representative of the extreme level classes, i.e., the aristocratic and the ragamuffins, in order to uproot the class distinction. Besides this, his deliberately contrived disorder manner in the description of his characters also gives a realistic touch to his poetry. Let us discuss his characters one by one.
