Chaucer's Realism

CHAUCER'S REALISM

Realism means to paint life as it is. The writer depicts the true picture of his observations without influencing his likes or dislikes. Realism is of two types. i.e. contemporary and universal. Contemporary realism means to paint the true picture of contemporary society whereas in Universal realism, the writer presents the essence of reality true for all ages. Chaucer's poetry contains both types of realism. i.e. contemporary and universal. Let us probe into the 'Prologue to the Canterbury Tales' so that we may point out salient elements of realism in Chaucer's poetry.
